ZDBox is my latest discovery.

Great app! Simple Interface! It does what it does, and doesn’t clutter the user with a lot of UI stuff to do it. Well thought out, and well implemented.

I’m posing a link here to an article from 1975 by Edsger Dijkstra. If you know who he is, you are not only a geek but probably a real alter kocher, like me… (That’s the rough yiddish translation of “old fart”)

Anyway, good old Edsger wrote this article a long time ago, and some of what he had to say about computers and the industry stands the test of time. Some of what he says (not all here) doesn’t. We can’t forget that he was a luddite who thought that Object-Oriented Programming was a passing fad…

For the truly geeky of the world, it is a love/hate relationship.

Why ?

• It’s not the “Mac Tablet” that some of us were waiting for. Instead of creating a Mac Tablet – (which wouldn’t really have faired any better among the geeky than the Macbook Air has – processor/video underpowered, not enough ram or disk space to be a power laptop), Apple has taking the iPhone up a notch. And turned the mobile computing world on it’s head.
• It looks like “A Great Big Ipod Touch” – of course the apps and the OS has been retooled to take advantage of the large display, and make it a better browsing experience.
• It won’t do away with the laptop computer (or the iPhone). It is supposed to sit in between the two. So instead of getting a mobile computing device to replace what we are already carrying, we now have ONE MORE THING TO CARRY

Seriously, the whole concept of a tablet computer was flawed from the beginning because they were trying to shove an entire general purpose computer into a tablet package without addressing the issues of the UI.

Making an iPhone/iPod Touch with a bigger screen — That’s something that this geek has been looking for every since he got over how cool his iPod touch was (if only I didn’t have to scroll around to see things… if only the screen were bigger … if only….)

The VUE project is focused on creating flexible tools for managing and integrating digital resources in support of teaching, learning and research. VUE provides a flexible visual environment for structuring, presenting, and sharing digital information.
